Hi all,
Currently I have a two computers :
- The first one is my gateway. It's running Freebsd 5.2 stable, has two
networks cards, a realtek 8139 and a broadcom 4401
- The second one is my laptop and it's running most of the time Linux
(Mandrake cooker with a 2.6.6 kernel), sometimes winxp (because of the
lack of support for some hardware components) and has a sis900 network
adapter
My problem is :
I have very poor performances with tcp streams from my server to my
laptop (0.35 Mb/s), but throughput is normal from the laptop to the
server (90Mb/s) and also (my favorite one) from Internet to my laptop
(~4Mb/s).
When I'm running WinXP, all is quite normal.
I've tried to invert network cards on my server, to bypass my switch :
no result
Any idea ?

In ifconfig stats, I have no error, no overruns or dropped packets.
And remove the acpi modules have no effect...
I've also done some tests with netperf
If I use a kernel 2.4.26 on my server, I have 48Mb/s from server to
laptop. With a 2.6.6 kernel on the both sides, it's only 30Mb/s

You're obviously not the only one with that problem, because I'm having a
similar problem with my laptop's (Acer Aspire 1705SCi) sis900 NIC:
If I test network performance using netio I get ~4.4 MByte/s from my Linux
server (RTL8139 NIC) to the laptop but ~11 MB/s from the laptop to the
server (if the laptop is running Linux).
Disabling ACPI or the APIC doesn't help in my case, too.
When I'm running WinXP or FreeBSD on the laptop I get 11 MB/s in both
directions.

- same thing if the acpi module is not inserted _at all_ during the boot ?
- how do you stress the network pipe ?
- you probably want to provide detailled ethtool/lspci -vx output,
(complete) dmesg from the boot sequence and vmstat 1 during your tests.
/proc/interrupts can't hurt either
Please consider a follow-up of the thread on netdev@oss.sgi.com

I've checked this one before posting but in my case, I've only one PHY
transceiver according to dmesg, so this patch has probably no effect...

You said you reach 4Mb/s from Internet to your laptop. I guess this is
on a distinct LAN than the one where your freebsd server stands, right ?

My FreeBSD server acts as a gateway. On one side, there is my laptop,
and on the other side, I've a DSL access with a download throughput
which reach usually the 4-5Mb/s
When I download with my laptop from Internet, the flow pass thru my
gateway and I can reach the limit (with a good ftp server...). But when
I directly download from my own server, it's slower than to download
from Internet...

I also do some tests with ethereal up, and the log contains a lot of
retransmission and duplicate acknoledgment packets.
I add to this mail :
- netperf.out.bz2 -> the ascii readable log (compressed with bzip2)
- netpert.dump.bz2 -> the log (format pcap, also compressed with bzip2)
