* Git in Outreachy? (December, 2023)

Christian and I got an email from the Outreachy organizers asking if
the Git project is interested in participating this year. Last year we
submitted projects, but ultimately did not select anybody from the
program.

I think it would be good to participate in this year's December cohort.
September 1, 2023 at 4pm UTC is the initial community application
deadline.

If we're interested, the project submission deadline is September 29th.
By then, we'd need:

  - Volunteers to act as mentors
  - Updates to our applicant materials on git.github.io (project ideas,
    as well as potential microprojects).

If folks are interested, I'd be more than happy to answer any questions
about participating, and overall logistics of the program.

Thanks,
Taylor

Actually we actually selected someone and a backup person in case the
first person was not eligible to participate, but unfortunately it
happened that both of them weren't eligible. And we learned that after
the selection process was closed.

The year before we had no applicants for some reason.

I agree it would be nice, and I am willing to mentor, or if possible
co-mentor, someone.

I wonder if we need a few Org Admins too.

Yeah, I can start working on the applicant material after my current vacation.

Depending on the projects that we'll be proposing, I may be able to
co-mentor for one. Though, my timeline looks uncertain now. So, I'm
unsure about it. I should be able to mention for sure after before the
mentor sign-up deadline.

Regardless, I should be able to help us an Org Admin if there's a need :-)

I'm guessing the mentor sign up deadline aligns with the project
submission timeline. Could you kindly confirm the same, Taylor?

I couldn't find any specific mention of it on the schedule[1], but AFAIR
we can add mentors at any time after the Git project confirms its
participation.

Ok Taylor. Thanks for the information!

BTW, I think the deadline to sign up for Outreachy is approaching soon I
believe. The community page [1] seems to indicate that we haven't signed
up yet. Given that there was an interest in us participating in
Outreachy, I just wanted to check whether we've signed up our community ?

Indeed. I was waiting to see if interested parties had the resources to
sponsor an Outreachy student, since we have to pay Outreachy for each
student we accept.

If you (or others) are interested in mentoring but don't have a way to
pay Outreachy, we could certainly discuss allocating some of the
project's funds to support one or two students.

Thanks,
Taylor

It will take some time before I can confirm whether or not GitLab is
willing to sponsor one Outreachy intern.

> If you (or others) are interested in mentoring but don't have a way to

I clicked on the "Community will participate" button, but this leads
to a page saying "Outreachy internship funding is required" and where
we have to list the sponsors we have, the amount of funds they are
willing to sponsor, if the funding is secured and the funding decision
date. I think I will fill this out saying that we have 3 (potential)
sponsors: the Git project, GitHub and GitLab. I will not check the
"funding is secured" checkbox and say that the decision date is
October 5 (so just one day before the deadline for "Project list
finalized"). This will leave time to find out if we can indeed sponsor
at least one intern.

Let me know if that works for both of you.

By the way, Kaartic, do you still want to be an org admin? And Taylor
are you Ok with Kaartic being an org admin?

It seems that I received an email asking me to confirm Kaartic as an
org admin, but I couldn't confirm then and later when clicked to the
link to confirm it looked like it wasn't possible anymore to confirm
that. So not sure what happened, but maybe we could try again to
register you as an org admin.

Best,
Christian.

I actually hit that button to become a community coordinator without confirming here about the need.

I would be able to help as a community coordinator for this round. I'm not sure about being able to mentor, yet.

That said, I believe both of you would do a great job as coordinators for the Git community. So, if you feel like you both could manage without help, that's totally fine. I'll check on the project list once it's available and explore the feasibility of mentoring :-)

Taylor, thanks for your answer!

Kaartic, if you want to be org admin, just ask on the Outreachy web
site and we will accept your request.

Thanks,
Christian.

Hi Christian and Taylor,

Excuse the huge delay in my response. I got too pre-occuppied with some
other commitments.

Thanks for the offer!

I think we're very close to the end of the contribution period of
Outreachy. I think the contribution period is the on that would've
needed significant participation of an Org Admin. I'm not sure if
there's anything I could contribute to much in coming days. If there's
anything I could help with, kindly let me know. I'll be glad to help :-)
